John 14:27 recounts Jesus comforting His disciples with these words: “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.“

The book of John emphasizes that Jesus is God himself incarnate in human flesh. He is the very Word of God became flesh (John 1: 1-5).

This comforting passage from the incarnate Christ comes prior to His arrest, trial, and crucifiction. He is explaining to His Disciples why He must go away. What is so ironic is that Paul gives the church in Philippi a similar message while he is in prison (Philippians 4: 6-7). Check out my Vlog to hear about it https://youtu.be/PaR8hWbfYYU

So what does Jesus mean when He says “I do not give as the world gives?” Other passages in John tell us Jesus is talking about sending the Holy Spirit which lives in every believer. He also explains to His disciples that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth which the world cannot accept, and does not know (John 14: 15-20).

The world has its own truth usually based on external factors.

As a result, many people disagree with Christians regarding moral and ethical behaviors and practices. They perceive us as judge-mental and really it is the Holy Spirit living in us convicting us of the truth. Sadly, the world is blind to this truth since it is spiritually discerned. The world has its own truth usually based on external factors that come from the spirit of darkness. This is the same spirit who crucified Jesus. Jesus tells His disciples the world will persecute and even kill some of them and believe they are offering service to God (John 16: 1-4).

Remember that Satan is the prince of the world and Jesus is the king of our hearts.

This is why we are not to let our hearts be troubled. If we believe in Him, He will send the comforter, who is the Holy Spirit. Throughout the book of John there is an emphasis on the divine nature of Christ – and reminders of how those who believe in Him will live with Him forever.

As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit as our comforter. We have hope because we know Christ is coming back for us: “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going” ( John 14: 2-4).

Regardless of what’s going on around you, take comfort in the fact that the Word of God became flesh and told you not to worry.
