In Psalm 68 we’re told that God is: “A father to the fatherless,” “A defender of widows,” and that He: “sets the lonely in families.”

Sometimes abuse, addiction, infidelity, death, or dysfunction make it impossible for us to have a healthy relationship with our paternal or maternal families.

Just as it says in Genesis that a man shall “leave his father and mother and be joined with his wife,” in a similar way we may need to ‘leave’ our family and ‘cleave’ to a new one.

It’s not easy, and if you’ve been wounded it’s difficult to trust others. Pray for the restoration of your family, and asked God to help you forgive them. In the meantime, press in to your church and your community. If you’re struggling with fear and social anxiety try getting counseling or joining a support group initially.

While it’s not always possible to be completely free from past wounds, being in a healthy ‘family’ or community that loves and supports you can help equip you with the strength and courage to lead a victorious life; one where peace can reign instead of chaos; purpose can motivate you instead of survival, and where painful memories can become tools to help others who are hurting.

“Someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.” But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:47-50)
