In my last post I talked about why it is important to hear from God. More than getting what we want and need out of life; it is about loving others, spiritual transformation, and living in the Kingdom of God right here on earth.

But, how do we hear from God?  Of course, one way is through His Word. However, many of us may not always fully grasp the power of His word. Hebrews 4:12 tells us: For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Have you ever been meditating on a particular scripture and then you head out with a clear plan for the day, then at some point things take a subtle turn and you feel like God is leading you here or there; or directing you to talk to this person or that person? That is God’s Word working through you! Active and alive! As that Word comes alive in your spirit, you are acting together with God! That is God speaking to you and through you. The late author Dallas Willard said it like this: “The Holy Spirit seems to mix and mingle His power with our own, so that what happens is both a heightening of our own powers, and a gift from the outside” (Willard, 2012, p. 103).

One of the ways God speaks to us is when we are guided by His Word living in our hearts. Now that doesn’t mean we have to sit around and memorize scripture all day. For instance, one morning on my way to work I listened to 1 John 3:18-22 several times. I summarized what the main key points were that I thought God wanted me to know. One of them was to love others. I asked the Lord to help me do that. Well, I went to work ready to talk about Disneyland on my radio program and ended up talking about the stories of Campfire victims. Wouldn’t you know God put like twenty of them in my life that day! Of course, I could not help all of them, but I could help a few of them. That is God speaking to us. His Word, working in our lives, active and alive.

God’s Word has power. It is more than just pages in a book. We have to believe that if we want to hear from God. Remember, God spoke the world into being.

In my next post I’ll share some other ways we can hear from God, and how to differentiate His voice from others.
